About the Project

The AMÉO (Educational Marine Areas in the Indian Ocean) project is an innovative environmental education programme that empowers young people to become active participants in the protection of coral reefs and marine ecosystems.

Implemented across six islands of the Indian Ocean, Mauritius, Rodrigues, Réunion, Seychelles, Comoros and Madagascar, the project introduces students to the concept of Educational Marine Areas (EMAs): marine spaces studied, managed and protected by students with the support of teachers, local communities and environmental professionals.

By combining scientific discovery, hands-on conservation actions and regional cooperation, AMÉO aims to strengthen young people's connection with the ocean while fostering a shared commitment to protecting the natural and cultural heritage of the Indian Ocean.

Coral reefs are among the most diverse and valuable ecosystems on Earth, yet they are increasingly threatened by human activities and climate change.

AMÉO helps students explore the fascinating world of coral reefs through engaging and accessible learning experiences. Through educational games, field activities, creative workshops and innovative Art & Science approaches, children develop a deeper understanding of marine biodiversity and the importance of protecting it.

Take Action

Learning is only the first step. Through their Educational Marine Areas, students identify environmental challenges affecting their local marine environment and work together to implement practical conservation solutions.

By taking action, they become ambassadors for reef protection within their schools, families and communities while developing leadership, teamwork and critical thinking skills.

Cooperate Across Islands

The ocean connects the islands of the Indian Ocean, and so do the challenges facing coral reefs.

AMÉO promotes collaboration between students, teachers and environmental stakeholders across the region. Through exchanges, collaborative projects and shared learning experiences, participants gain a broader understanding of environmental issues while contributing to a growing network dedicated to marine conservation.

AMÉO in Mauritius

In Mauritius, the project is currently being implemented in three educational institutions:

• Jean Eon RCA

• Oasis de Paix

• Mon Progrès Roche Bois (MPRB)

Since its launch in February 2026, students have embarked on a journey of discovery centred on coral reef ecosystems.

The first activities invited children to draw healthy and degraded coral reefs, allowing facilitators to explore their existing perceptions and understanding of the marine environment. These creative exercises provided valuable insights while encouraging curiosity and discussion.

Students were subsequently introduced to the AMÉO programme and the MARECO educational toolkit, before participating in interactive learning sessions through the Bis Lamer Caravan.

Through weekly activities, students have explored key topics including:

• Coral formation and growth

• The role of coral polyps

• Coral life cycles

• Different coral species

• Coral bleaching and its causes

• The importance of coral reefs for marine biodiversity

Educational games such as the "7 Families" card game and the "Jeu du Plateau" have further reinforced learning through play, helping students build knowledge in an engaging and enjoyable way.

As the project progresses, students will continue to deepen their understanding of marine and coastal ecosystems while identifying actions that can contribute to the protection of coral reefs in their communities.

Building a Network for Marine Conservation

AMÉO goes beyond environmental education. It creates opportunities for collaboration between schools, communities, environmental organisations and decision-makers across the Indian Ocean.

Through correspondence between students, collaborative storytelling projects, exchange opportunities and shared presentations, participants contribute to a regional movement dedicated to the sustainable management of marine ecosystems.

Together, they are helping to build a future where young people are informed, engaged and empowered to protect the ocean that connects us all.

Expected Impact

By 2028, the AMÉO project aims to:

• Establish six Educational Marine Areas across six Indian Ocean islands.

• Implement locally led conservation actions in each Educational Marine Area.

• Develop educational resources adapted to local contexts.

• Strengthen environmental awareness among students and their communities.

• Foster a regional network committed to coral reef conservation and sustainable ocean stewardship.

Through education, action and cooperation, AMÉO is nurturing a new generation of environmental champions for the Indian Ocean.
