Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools and provides a simple framework to help make sustainability an integral part of school life. Through this programme, young people experience a sense of achievement at being able to have a say in the environmental management policies of their schools, ultimately steering them towards certification and the prestige which comes with being awarded an International Green Flag.

The Eco-Schools programme is an ideal way for schools to embark on a meaningful path towards improving the environment in both the school and the local community while at the same time having a life-long positive impact on the lives of young people, their families, school staff and local authorities.

The Eco-Schools programme consists of three structural elements - The Seven Steps Framework, the Eco-Schools Themes, and Assessment for the Bronze, Silver and Green Flag Award. To be successful the programme requires support from school leaders and the Board. Active involvement of staff is imperative as well as long-term commitment and the willingness to involve students in decision-making

The Eco-Schools Programme was launched in 2015 in Mauritius with 28 pilot schools. We currently have 201 schools registered in the programme with 77 awarded the prestigious International Green Flag Award, 15 the Silver Award and 8 the Bronze Award.

In Rodrigues, the programme was launched in 2019 in all 25 schools. We currently have 18 schools awarded the International Green Flag Award, 1 Silver Awarded school and 1 Bronze Awarded School.
